IEA Annex 60 project – New generation computational tools for building and community energy systems

Together with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA), the Chair in Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building (E3D) coordinates the 5-year International Energy Agency (IEA) Annex 60 project “New generation computational tools for building and community energy systems based on the Modelica and Functional Mockup Interface standards” (2012-2017) within the framework of the Energy Conservation in Buildings and Community Energy Systems (EBC) programme. Co-operating Agents are Michael Wetter (LBNL) and Christoph van Treeck (E3D). Within the Annex 60, scientists of 11 countries cooperate internationally.

The objectives of Annex 60 are to develop and demonstrate next-generation computational tools that allow building and community energy systems and grids to be designed and operated as integrated, robust, performance based systems. The technology is based on the object-oriented modeling language “Modelica” and the co-simulation standard “Functional Mockup Interface”. Within the associ-ated national project EnEff-BIM, the German team focuses on the process of de-riving energy performance models from digital information models such as BIM. This includes further development of data representation and data exchange formats for energy load calculation and energy performance simulation such as the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), as well as coupling numerical tools using co-simulation.
